Zidikai Marija Peckauskaite- secondary school - The system of education in Lithuania consists of the structures of formal and non-formal education. Formal education is regulated and controlled by the State. A diploma or a certificate (which is acknowledged by the State) is given after passing the exams.
Formal education consists of: a) consecutive system of education which includes pre- school education institutions, children’s and youth general education schools, vocational schools, colleges and high schools; b) non- consecutive system of education includes the formal education institutions of adults.
Non- formal education means self-education which depends on a person’s needs and which is not regulated by the State educational institutions.
General education consists of three stages, i.e. primary, basic and secondary. The primary stage includes I-IV classes of a school. Not younger than 6 years old children who have achieved the necessary level of psycho-physical maturity can start attending the first class.
After a primary school students continue learning at the basic stage of a school which includes V-X classes. The third stage of general education, i.e. secondary, includes XI-XII classes.
A gymnasium is a school which provides the extended and profiled general education and has higher requirements. It includes 9-12 classes.
